Leo Graf Tolstoi

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) is considered one of the most important writers in European literature, particularly thanks to his two monumental works »War and Peace« as well as »Anna Karenina«.

In the second half of the 19th century, the scion of a noble family became increasingly concerned with progressive educational ideas and committed himself to the fate of the peasant population. Throughout his life, such activities earned him the suspicion of the tsarist authorities.

At his family estate Yasnaya Polyana, Tolstoy, surrounded by numerous admirers, led a life according to his ideals. His later writings bear witness to an intensive examination of religious and philosophical questions of meaning.

In 1910 Tolstoy died of pneumonia during a journey after he had left his wife in a dispute over his literary estate.
