Friedrich August von Hayek (* 8 May 1899 in Vienna; † 23 March 1992 in Freiburg im Breisgau) was an Austrian-British economist and social philosopher. He was a theorist of neoliberalism and is one of the most important thinkers of liberalism in the 20th century. In the course of his life, he wrote almost 50 books, nearly 30 pamphlets and around 270 academic essays. His works have been translated into about 20 languages. His work on price theory, i.e. how prices transmit information and control economic activity, is considered his most important contribution to economics. Hayek received numerous academic awards and honours, including the Nobel Prize in Economics (1974), which he shared with Gunnar Myrdal.
