Habilitation at the University of Frankfurt am Main on the history of German legal studies. 2007-2015 Professor at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, since 4/2015 Professor for German Legal History and Civil Law at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg. Chairman of the Freiburg Society for Legal History.
